Walk a finished exterior job and the trim work tells you immediately whether the contractor sweats the details. Wood rot around windows and fascia is one of the most common punch-list items on older homes. Most of it was preventable with aluminum trim coil, and most of the contractors who didn’t use it just didn’t think to add it to the scope.

What Aluminum Trim Coil Is

Trim coil is a coil of pre-painted aluminum in a standard width, typically 24 inches, though it comes in other widths for specific applications. We stock 24 inches by 50 foot coils. Contractors cut it to length, bend it to profile with a brake and use it to cap or wrap wood substrates on the exterior of a house.

The material is thin and workable. You can bend a custom profile on site for a specific detail without fabrication equipment. It’s not complicated once you’ve done it a few times and the end result is a sealed, painted aluminum surface where wood used to be exposed.

Where Contractors Use Aluminum Trim Coil

Window wrapping is the most common application. The wood buck around a window gets wrapped in aluminum before the window goes in, or the trim around the finished window gets capped after. Either way, the wood is sealed from moisture and the finished surface stays clean over time.

Fascia covering is the other high-volume use. Old wood fascia on a repaint or re-exterior job often has soft spots or surface damage. Rather than replacing the board, the contractor runs trim coil over it and finishes clean. It reads like new fascia from the street.

Custom corner wraps, sill pans and J-return details are other places trim coil gets used by contractors who know the material well. If you’re touching wood on the exterior of a house, trim coil is worth thinking about.

Why It Matters in Idaho

Southern Idaho has more moisture cycling than a lot of contractors account for. Irrigation season, spring snowmelt and periodic heavy rain after weeks of really dry weather puts pressure on any wood that isn’t properly sealed. Trim coil eliminates both problems on the areas it covers. Aluminum doesn’t rot, doesn’t absorb moisture and holds its painted finish longer than painted wood under comparable conditions. The folded edges and tight corners, when done right, don’t give moisture anywhere to get in.
